Substantial growth spurt for web stores in January

Online sales by the retail trade rose sharply in the first month of 2019 compared to January 2018. There was an increase of 15.8 percent. That is ten times as high as the overall sales growth in the retail trade.

This is according to figures from Statistics Netherlands, which have been corrected for the number of shopping days in January.

Web stores have converted 11.8 percent more. The multi-channel growers, stores with physical properties and online sales, achieved a sales growth of 21.6 percent with their web stores.

Stores in do-it-yourself items, kitchens and floors booked the highest sales increase (6.2 percent). Furniture stores and home furnishings stores also performed well. Supermarket sales increased 1.9 percent.
