The referendum for the amendment of the constitution begins Saturday, April 20. It must allow Abdel Fattah al-Sissi to remain in power until 2030.

With our correspondent in Cairo, Alexandre Buccianti,

61 million Egyptian voters are called to vote on a series of amendments to the constitution of 2014. They have three days to do this, starting this Saturday (and even as early as Friday for the voters of the diaspora ).

The most important element put to the vote concerns the extension of the presidential mandate, allowing Abdel Fattah al-Sissi to remain in power until 2030 instead of 2022. The amendments also make the army the guarantor of the constitution and set a 25% quota for women in parliament.

" The first day of voting abroad was satisfactory, " said the Egyptian minister of emigration without giving figures of participation. The participation rate is, indeed, the real challenge facing the Egyptian power, because the overwhelming victory of the "yes" is no doubt. But we must try to do as much if not better than in the referendum on the constitution of 2014, when 39% of voters had voted.

To achieve this goal, we did not skimp on the means. Advertisements, songs and video clips are broadcast almost in a loop on public and private radio and television. The streets are flooded with billboards and banners calling on Egyptians to vote " for stability ". Muslim and Christian religious figures, the world of arts and sports were also involved.
