The Chinese government has offered Elon Musk an exclusive residence permit after the entrepreneur was present at the start of the construction of a new 'gigafabriek' of Tesla.

According to news agency Bloomberg , there are only about ten thousand foreigners with such a residence permit. With the residence permit in hand, foreigners in China get the same rights as Chinese citizens.

For example, the holder of the license gives the opportunity to purchase houses and to claim social insurance. The permit is only granted to people who have made a special contribution to Chinese society.

The Dutch chemist Ben Feringa, winner of a Nobel Prize, was offered the same residence permit after he had led a team at the East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai. Other Nobel laureates are also members of the exclusive club.

Musk met Li Keqiang last Wednesday after the ceremony at the new 'gigafabriek', the first Chinese car factory that will be completely in foreign hands. Li added that he hopes Tesla can stimulate American-Chinese relations.
