Op = Op Voordeelshop budget chain applies for bankruptcy at the Northern Netherlands court. The group has 130 own stores and it employs 1,164 people who share 318 full-time jobs.

The stores in the chain, which also has a webshop, remain open until further notice. The ten franchise stores are not covered by the bankruptcy.

The retail chain is known, among other things, as a discount store in premium brands and specializes in personal care and household products.

The group says it has had to deal with "challenging market conditions that require constant adjustment of the store formula and business operations".

In their own words, the shareholders have made extra money available in the last two years, but this was insufficient to "guide the company through this period". A slimming down of the company was not possible.

Op = Op Voordeelshop was founded in 1997 in Klazienaveen in Drenthe and the concern expanded from the north. The group wanted to grow to three hundred stores.
