The Health and Social Care Inspectorate has found several major shortcomings following an audit of Södertälje's nursing homes, including a lack of competence among the staff. The deficiencies that have been discovered pose patient safety risks, according to the authority. "We take this very seriously," says Raakel Kuusiniemi, Acting Head of Health and Medical Care.

The shortcomings came to light after Ivo in 2022 and 2023 reviewed the medical care and treatment at nursing homes, also called nursing homes, around Sweden.

In Södertälje, four areas in particular are now being criticized: the staff's lack of competence and knowledge of the Swedish language, medication management, end-of-life care and documentation.

The requirement: Action by June

"IVO further notes that many life-changing assessments of patients at SÄBO (Special housing for the elderly, eds. Note) are made by the staff with the lowest level of training," the report states.

IVO demands that Södertälje municipality take action by 22 June to rectify the shortcomings.

Listen to Raakel Kuusiniemi, acting head of health and medical care, Södertälje municipality, comment on the sharp criticism in the clip above.
