"The staff of the State Kremlin Palace sadly announces the death of the Soviet and Russian ballet dancer and choreographer, founder, permanent artistic director and chief choreographer of the Kremlin Ballet Theater, People's Artist of Russia Andrei Petrov, who passed away on April 23 at the age of 78," the theater said in a statement. "We mourn the loss and express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Andrei Borisovich Petrov, as well as to the troupe of his favorite brainchild - the Kremlin Ballet Theater.
Andrei Petrov graduated from the Moscow Choreographic School in 1965, after which he devoted 20 years of his life to the stage of the academic Bolshoi Theater of the USSR.
Petrov founded the Ballet Theater in the Kremlin in 1990, and from 1993 to 2001 he was the general director of the State Kremlin Palace.
Earlier, composer Alexei Muravlev, who composed music for the song "Am I to blame", died.
