Djibouti has become the center of evacuation efforts from Sudan. SVT's Africa correspondent Johan Ripås is on site and has met affected Swedes on their way home. "This whole little airport is full of military planes from all different nations, people from all over the world are here who have been evacuated," he said.

The bloody fighting between the regular army and the paramilitary RSF in Sudan has led to major international evacuation efforts in the country. And both military and evacuees land at Djibouti airport when they arrive from Sudan.

SVT's Africa correspondent Johan Ripås is on site and has met victims who come directly from the capital Khartoum. He describes them as "visibly shocked".

A woman says she has spent several days in her storage room sheltered from bombs and gunfire. Others testify to food shortages and fighting outside their homes.

"They have lived in Khartoum for many years, and seen both military coups and droughts and so on, but this was something completely different. This was really heavy fighting in the middle of the city, says Johan Ripås about a family that has been forced to flee.

More difficult phase

At the same time, the evacuation effort is now entering a more difficult phase.

"Now there are other people left who live a little more spread out and are harder to reach," he says.
