Gas and oil companies make huge profits - while households are forced to live in the dark

Households are also having a hard time in the UK. Former social worker John Hudson is forced to live in the dark because gas costs have become too expensive. At the same time, some of the major gas and oil companies made record profits last year.


It has led to a major debate that oil companies, which have benefited from Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, can increase their profits while others find it increasingly difficult to meet the cost of living in one of the world's richest countries.

- Governments have a moral obligation to ensure that we recover part of the profits from the oil and gas companies, says Tessa Kahn, environmental lawyer at Climate Litigations.

Many of the oil companies that marketed themselves as part of a green transition have now also lowered their climate ambitions.
