The setback: The ex-captain misses the European Championships at home

There will be no home championship for Steph Houghton. The midfielder with over 120 internationals for England has fought a battle against the clock to recover from an injury but was not included in the squad.

The 34-year-old plays everyday in Manchester City and had surgery on his hamstring in February.

She thus missed the entire spring season but still had hopes of recovering and being selected for this summer's European Championship finals at home.

But that will not be the case.

Houghton has played 121 international matches for England, participated in five championships and been team captain.

One player who is in Sarina Wiegman's squad, however, is Jill Scott.

Scott has made the second most internationals for England, 156 games to be exact.

England will thus play the European Championships at home and they will kick off the championship with the premiere match against Austria at a sold-out Old Trafford on 6 July.
