Commuters about the border closure: "It feels like a political game"

1/27/2021, 7:52:34 PM

Both Fredrica Bornstedt and her husband commute to work in Norway from their home in Jössefors in western Värmland and have been tried hard during the corona pandemic. Today's announcement of further stricter rules for those who are allowed to cross the Norwegian border will now be a further test for the spouses.

- It feels like a political game, says Fredrica Bornstedt about the message that came from the Norwegian government on Wednesday night.

The announcement means that the Norwegian border will be closed to anyone who does not work in socially critical activities such as health and care.

- Now that both Sweden and Finland have closed the border to Norway, it feels like they want to give again, says Fredrica Bornstedt.

Fredrica Bornstedt lives with her husband and two children in a villa in Värmland's Jössefors.

For almost six years she has commuted across the border to the job as a teacher in Austmarka, Norway.

The past year has been a trial for the family with border closures and extensive corona testing.

Today's message was therefore far from welcome.

- It is a disaster, says Fredrika Bornstedt.

Fredrika Bornstedt will probably be able to continue commuting to work as a teacher in Austmarka.

She has received information that her job is classified as socially critical.

But for her husband who works in the industry, it is a stop at the border and it is unclear whether he will receive any salary while the border is closed.

- Nobody knows anything.

Will the Norwegian government go in and pay?

is the question that now hangs over Fredrica Bornstedt and her family.
