Conflict stops NBA teams on Chinese television

12/29/2020, 9:15:53 AM

The Chinese streaming service Tencent stops showing the NBA team Philadelphia 76ers matches. The background is the conflict between the Chinese government and general manager Daryl Morey, who before the season joined Philadelphia from the Houston Rockets.

In October 2019, Morey tweeted a tribute to the ongoing demonstrations in Hong Kong, while his then team Houston was in pre-season camp at the resort.

"Fight for freedom.

Stand up for Hong Kong, "he wrote.

The aftermath and consequences of the tweet were great.

The league lost several million dollars in revenue from the Chinese market, which is the NBA's second largest after the United States.

Large parts of the league, including Houston owner Tilman Fertitta, distanced themselves from Morey's statement.

Morey, a highly respected general manager, switched Houston to Philadelphia at the start of the season.

This season, Tencent does not show any matches with either Houston or Philadelphia.
