The Toulouse administrative court on Monday put an end to the standoff between the prefect of Tarn-et-Garonne and the mayor, Brigitte Barèges (LR) who, to defend her non-essential businesses, had signed a decree authorizing them to reopen in from October 31.
The outcome was predictable, as in all rebellious towns, the municipal decree was suspended.
The court recalled that, in the context of the state of health emergency, the Prime Minister did have a special police right which is imposed on mayors.
Moreover, the judges noted that since November 2 and the closure of non-essential departments of supermarkets, the argument of “unfair competition” used by Brigitte Barèges no longer holds.
