On August 6 and 9, 1945, the United States launched nuclear strikes against Japan. The cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed. Hundreds of thousands of people died, mostly civilians. Many local residents have died from the effects of radiation for decades. According to the grandson of US President Harry Truman, his grandfather did not regret his decision to launch a nuclear strike on Japanese cities and considered his actions to be correct. Answering journalists' questions whether the United States will apologize to Japan for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Clifton Truman Daniel said: "I do not know if an apology will ever follow." Historians note that the use of nuclear weapons did not make sense from a military point of view - Japan had already suffered heavy losses and was doomed to defeat in World War II, but Washington wanted to demonstrate its capabilities to Moscow.
