The reason is a dispute between the International Parasport Association, IPC, and the International Wheelchair Basketball Association, IWBF, regarding the classification of the active, writes AP.
IPC wants to re-examine some of the competitors who have been awarded the Tokyo sign. According to IPC, it is about 50-75 active people who have too good mobility to participate in a Paralympics.
"Can't stand above the regulations"- We appreciate that wheelchair basketball is one of the most popular sports in the Paralympics, but that does not mean that the IWBF can stand above the rules, says IPC chairman Andrew Parsons, who claims that the integrity of the sport is compromised if IWBF does not follow the rules.
The IWBF wants to reach a settlement with IPC before the Paralympics in Tokyo (which is broadcast in SVT) and tone down the tough play from IPC. And want to reach a deal to keep the branch in the Paralympics.
"It is important to emphasize that our athletes are not questioned but that we only use other terms in classification," says Regina Costa, who heads the IWBF's class division.
