Iranian President Hassan Rouhani promised Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky to send a special representative to Ukraine in the near future to formally express regret over the crash of a Ukrainian passenger plane in Tehran, which was accidentally shot down by the Iranian military.

This is stated on the website of the Iranian leader.

“In the near future, I will send a special representative to your country who will officially express to Ukraine the regret of the Iranian people and government,” Rouhani said.

He also said that he had ordered the Iranian Foreign Minister to be in constant contact with his Ukrainian counterpart and to continue cooperation on the incident.

Earlier it was reported that Rouhani discussed with Zelensky a plane crash in Tehran.

The crash of a passenger plane of Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737 occurred on January 8 shortly after takeoff, killing 176 people.

On January 11, Iran admitted that the liner was shot down as a result of a human error.

As Amir Ali Hajizade, Commander of the Space Forces of the IRGC explained, the Iranian air defense system mistook the Ukrainian passenger plane for a cruise missile.
