Macron called on Rouhani to refrain from escalating tensions in the region

French President Emmanuel Macron, in a telephone conversation with Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani, called on Tehran to refrain from escalating tensions in the Middle East.


“The President of the Republic emphasized France’s deep concern over recent developments in Iraq and the region, as well as France’s determination to work to ease tensions. He called on Iran to refrain from any measures that exacerbate the ongoing escalation, ”TASS quoted the press service of the Champs Elysees as saying.

On January 5, Macron had a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump. The parties discussed the situation in Iraq and the Middle East.

Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps General (IRGC) Kassem Suleimani died on the night of January 3 as a result of a missile attack on the United States at Baghdad Airport.

Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani called his murder a serious crime.
