12/10/2019, 8:52:23 PM

Fire fighting is underway at a hotel in Somalia's capital Mogadishu, according to police and witnesses. According to the police, it is an attack carried out by members of the terror-labeled jihadist group al-Shabaab. "We thought they were cops, but they started throwing grenades and firing at us and as they approached the hotel entrance we answered the fire," Ahmed police told Reuters news agency.

A spokesman for al-Shabaab states that several of its members are inside the hotel.

"The security forces are fighting a number of armed men who have barricaded themselves in the hotel area, but they will very soon have put a stop to the siege," police Ibrahim Mohamed told AFP.

The hotel being attacked is a few hundred meters from the president's well-guarded residence, Villa Somalia. The hotel is popular with government officials and diplomats and has been attacked on three previous occasions.
