In March 2014, a group of knife-armed terrorists attacked train passengers in Chinese Kunming. Over 150 people were injured and 31 were killed. No group took on the act, but Muslim separatists were identified as perpetrators. Shortly thereafter, President Xi Jinping announced a "tougher grip" in the war on terrorists. It became the starting point for an offensive directed at China's Muslim minorities.
