Hairdresser program is closed despite lack of staff

The hairdressing program at Sankt Eskils high school in Esklistuna is closed from 2021 due to too few applicants. At the same time, the industry is screaming for staff.


In recent years, there have been a record number of applications to the Hairdresser Program, which both staff and students believe are about many young people believe that professional programs limit their opportunities in the future.

"Opens all doors for the future"

- It is completely wrong to think that professional programs lock, it opens all doors for the future instead. And it gives basic college admission if the student wishes to study such courses, says Halina Sundqvist, principal at Sankt Eskil's high school.

Barber Shortage

According to Hairdressers, the hairdressers 'industry and employers' organization, there will be a shortage of qualified hairdressers over the next five years.

- There is a shortage of competent hairdressers today and I can say that it will take at least five years before the market is saturated, says Ted Gemzell, CEO of Hairdressers.

The opportunity to become a hairdresser for students from Eskilstina will still be found at the Grillska high school's hairdressing program.
