Care queues: Cancer patients from Stockholm are treated in Gävle

Gävle Hospital is currently receiving an extra number of patients on radiotherapy. The long care queues in Stockholm allow the oncologist in Gävle to receive more patients and therefore have more to do. But neither the staff nor the region's patients should be affected, the management promises.

The collaboration with Region Stockholm has already started and at the beginning it concerns six patients who will receive a total of 100 radiotherapy at Gävle Hospital. All are breast cancer patients.

"It was the Head of Operations for Oncology at Södersjukhuset who contacted us and other regions to see if anyone had the opportunity to help," says Johanna Ågren, Head of Operations Oncology.

There are 17 radiotherapy clinics in Sweden and at Gävle Hospital treat patients from Gävleborg, Dalarna and northern Uppland. And now also Stockholm.

"We are able to do this in our normal operations so that neither patients from our region nor the staff here should notice it all, next time we may need help," says care unit manager Åsa Bonnevier Svärdström.
