Following former President Lee Myung-bak, former President Park Geun-hye was also sentenced to a medium sentence, creating a situation where two former presidents were in prison at the same time.

The history of dishonor has been reenacted in 23 years following former Presidents Roh Tae-woo and Chun Doo-hwan, who served in prison after a medium sentence was confirmed in the Supreme Court in April 1997.

Today (14th), as the sentence of 20 years in prison for misappropriation of the Gukjeong Nongdan and the National Intelligence Service for special activity expenses was finalized to former President Park, former President Park, who was in custody, will be held in prison as a period in prison.

Adding two years of imprisonment, which has already been confirmed for intervening in the Saenuri Party's nomination, totals 22 years in prison.

Assuming that former President Park was arrested in March 2017 and is being held in a Seoul detention center to fill all his sentences without parole, he can only be released in 2039 when he turns 87.

Former President Lee Myung-bak is serving jail for 17 years on charges of bribery and embezzlement on October 29 last year.

He was sentenced to heavy sentences for bribery of 9.4 billion won and embezzlement of dozens of funds of 25.2 billion won.

As the middle sentence was confirmed even for former President Park, the two former presidents were put together in prison.

In the past, former Presidents Roh Tae-woo and Chun Doo-hwan also served simultaneously on charges such as the 12·12 military coup and the civil war related to the May 18 Gwangju democratization protest.

The two arrested in November 1995 were sentenced to 12 years in prison and life imprisonment in April 1997 at the Supreme Court.

In December of the same year, they were imprisoned for about two years, including the imprisonment period, until then President Kim Young-sam received a special pardon.

Former President Park and President Lee are somewhat different from the cases of former Presidents Roh Tae-woo and Chun Doo-hwan in that medium sentences were confirmed as separate cases.

However, it is evaluated that the'president cruelty' was repeated in that two former presidents were held in prison at the same time.

Former President Lee, who was imprisoned in the eastern detention center, was admitted to Seoul National University Hospital and is currently unable to return to the detention center due to the aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Former President Park is currently imprisoned in the Seoul Detention Center.

It is reported that it was recently tested negative for COVID-19 tests on detention center employees and detainees.
