An app to identify snakes and spiders - Geeko

Artificial intelligence and new technologies offer a whole host of applications. While they identify music, they can also help us learn more about the world and the creatures that inhabit the earth and even those that are not very popular. The Critterpedia app is the perfect example.

This app, developed by two Australians, Murray and Nic Scare, aims to raise awareness and inform people about snakes and spiders while offering to identify specimens crossed on its way.

“Educating people about our wildlife in a fun and interactive way, with a particular focus on our poisonous friends and exploring the reasons people harbor so many fears, is key to providing a platform that can really make a difference. difference in people's lives, ”explained Murray Scare.

Like a Pokédex

The app is able to identify a creepy creature or an eight-legged critter based on a simple photo. It also provides a rather detailed description. An operation that necessarily recalls that of the Pokédex in Pokémon . And since these critters are not always very friendly, Critterpedia includes a feature that allows you to contact emergency services in the event of a bite.

Powered by an AI and developed with the help of the Data 61 laboratory, attached to the Governmental Organization for Industrial and Scientific Research of Australia (or CSIRO), the application will indicate the level of toxicity of the species and will provide a multitude information, including its threat level. The more photos users take, the more the app's database will be provided and Critterpedia will therefore be more efficient at identifying bugs. The application is also closer to a social network since it allows you to create an account and share your findings with the community.

Still in development, the app should be released soon. Ultimately, there is talk of augmented and virtual reality making its appearance within the application.
