An American group specializing in the management of business travel has agreed to pay hackers $ 4.5 million in ransom to recover files. Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) was contacted on July 26 by the entity "Ragnar Locker", which claimed to have infected 30,000 computers and stolen 2 terabits of files containing personal information.

It was the cybersecurity company CyberAngel which spotted the information this Friday. According to screenshots, “Ragnar Locker” encrypted personal data before contacting CWT. The hackers were asking for $ 10 million to return the data and erase it from their servers.

No data would have been compromised

A very polite negotiation on the price of the ransom ensued. The exchanges were accessible online to all until Friday. The company argued that it had been severely affected by the pandemic. For their part, the hackers gave advice to avoid future intrusions. CWT has neither confirmed nor denied having paid a ransom, and only indicated that it was the victim of a “cyber incident”.

“We immediately launched an investigation and hired IT experts,” the company said. CWT has so far “no indication that customer or traveler data has been compromised”. After negotiations were completed, CWT agreed to pay the ransom in bitcoin, 414 in total, according to CyberAngel.
