On August 2, 1990, the Iraqi armed forces invaded Kuwait. In a short conflict that lasted only two days, the Iraqi army took control of most of Kuwait. Most states have condemned Baghdad's actions, and the United Nations has adopted a number of relevant resolutions, including allowing the use of "all necessary means to restore peace and security." The USSR tried to the last to prevent hostilities and achieve a peaceful settlement of the conflict, but these efforts were unsuccessful. The Western coalition, led by the United States, drove Iraqi troops out of Kuwait, using the army.
