Disney will release two films for theaters on its streaming platform - Geeko

After postponing the theatrical release of several films - including  Black Widow - Disney has decided to give up the screening in theaters of two feature films in favor of a release on its streaming platform. This is how the films The Only and Unique Ivan and Magic Camp will land on August 14 on Disney +, without going through the cinema box.

The decision of the big-eared firm is obviously linked to the health crisis facing the world population. For several months, the coronavirus pandemic has indeed had a significant impact on the entertainment market since cinemas have closed their doors to prevent the spread of the virus.

"Magic Camp" should have been released in April 2018

In the case of The One and Only Ivan , Disney's decision matters since it is a relatively ambitious film project. An adaptation of the eponymous novel by Katherine Alice Applegate released in 2012 which mixes live action shots with special effects. We note the presence of actor Bryan Cranston ( Breaking Bad ) in the cast, as well as actors Danny DeVito, Angelina Joli or even Helen Mirren who lent their voice to characters from the film.

But the case of Magic Camp is much more atypical and Disney's decision to release it on its streaming platform may not be a bad thing for the company. Production of the film began in 2017 and it was initially due to be released in theaters in April 2018 before being rescheduled for August. The screening of Magic Camp at the cinema was finally canceled. The film should have been part of the Disney + launch catalog, but it didn't. Its new release date should be right.

Disney is not the only entertainment company to have made the choice to release a movie online in the wake of the coronavirus crisis. Others before her have opted for this solution to be able to exploit films despite the situation.
