Netflix would lose more than $ 1.5 billion a year in revenue from account sharings - Geeko

Although it is available in many countries, Netflix does not offer the same content to all of its subscribers. Its catalog differs in fact from country to country, due to the agreements signed with the beneficiaries, but also to the laws of the countries and the tastes of the population. This is why many subscribers of the platform use VPNs to bypass geographic restrictions and thus take advantage of the French, American or other catalog of Netflix. A situation that obviously does not please everyone, including those entitled to series, films and documentaries offered on Netflix.

To combat this phenomenon, Netflix has developed a new system that allows programs subject to geographic restrictions to be blocked if a VPN service is detected. Until now, the streaming platform simply displayed that the selected content was "not available for this type of connection". Now programs limited to certain countries or regions will simply no longer appear when a VPN is activated.

Netflix did not communicate on this subject, it is the site uNoGS which noticed the change. A blow for the site since it lists the content available on the streaming service according to the country and therefore, provides information on the most supplied catalogs of Netflix.

A measure expected by the authors

For subscribers who did not use VPN, nothing changes. The content they previously had access to remains the same.

It has been a long time since rights holders have asked Netflix to put in place measures to combat the use of VPN on its platform. It is now done.
