“At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic is worsening in low- and middle-income countries, WHO is particularly concerned about its impact on people struggling for access to health services. Often we are talking about women, children and adolescents, ”TASS quoted the head of WHO.

He noted that “the indirect consequences of COVID-19 for these groups may be stronger than the number of deaths from the virus itself, because a pandemic in many places leads to an overload of health systems.”

“Women may be at a higher risk of dying from complications during childbirth,” added Gebreyesus.

Earlier, the Executive Director of the UN World Food Program, David Beasley, warned of the threat of mass starvation due to the COVID-19 pandemic if humanity does not ensure food security.
