“In the immediate vicinity of Alexander I’s Land and Bellingshausen Bay, the expedition discovered a depression of 800 meters, although the surrounding depths averaged about 200 meters. Such a phenomenon off the coast is a rarity, ”RIA Novosti reports the message of the Russian Geographical Society.

According to the expedition commander, Captain First Rank Oleg Osipov, the bottom of the Bellingshausen Sea in the immediate vicinity of the coast has a lot of deep longitudinal furrows that could have been left by sliding icebergs and glaciers.

Previously, scientists from the University of Colorado determined that the air in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica is the cleanest on Earth - no harmful impurities were found in it.
