Swedish-British-Spanish singer Mabel wants to show that her talent goes beyond last names. 2019 was the year of its takeoff with two worldwide hits

If the family marks what we are going to do, Mabel's fate was written from the beginning: her mother Neneh Cherry is one of the great Swedish singers that emerged in the 1990s. Her father, Cameron McVey is a renowned producer. His uncles Eagle-Eye Cherry and Titiyo Felicio have been writing songs for many years and his grandfather, trumpeter Don Cherry, was a jazz legend. Caste comes to the greyhound, go.

Mabel Alabama Pearl McVey was born in Alhaurín El Grande, Málaga, in 1996 and has Spanish, Swedish and British nationalities. The family did not reside long in Andalusia - he moved to Stockholm when little Mabel was barely three years old. But the mark remained and she herself affirms that "I can still speak a little Spanish" as a memory of that childhood from Malaga. In Sweden, while still a child, music began to attract attention, perhaps inevitable: "I lived immersed in that environment," he explains. "So much that I don't remember being interested in it. It was something that has always been there." That breeding ground encouraged a surprising precocity: "With five years I was already trying to compose songs. I think I've always known that I would dedicate myself to this world," he continues.

In any case, like so many other artists of his generation, he took the first serious step on the Internet. He did it on the Soundcloud platform, where in 2015 he was already hanging songs. These continued to arrive until in 2017 he found popular success with Finders Keepers , a theme in which rapper Kojo Funds collaborated and reached the British Top-10. A relatively quick success that caught the attention of multinationals and the public. "It's not easy to cope with the pressure being so young. Luckily, a great team of people around me has taught me how to get away from negativity and forced me to work hard," he says.

Takeoff

After a first EP entitled Bedroom (2017), that same year a mixtape came to light - a sort of song collection that does not reach the long album category - and, finally, in 2019, the official debut opera: High Expectations . Last year was the final one in his takeoff, with two world hits ( Don't Call Me Up and Mad Love ) and the aforementioned elepé, which reached number three of the lists of his country. "You can say that all expectations have been met," he confesses. "But I am sure there is still a lot of room for growth and improvement."

Musically, the sound of Mabel is the reflection of his time: dance-pop with high fidelity production and hip hop details. Everything sounds perfectly studied to please the widest possible audience, but some personality details are appreciated that may later become more artistic ambition, such as self-affirmation lyrics or confessions of anxiety and post-adolescent restlessness: "My music is a reflection of my emotions. It's there to inspire fans and help them with everything they need, "he concedes.

Regarding his imminent concert in Madrid, he says enthusiastically that he "loves the city" and is "looking forward to returning." On his dreams and aspirations, he is equally sure: "I have to find the best version of myself and be true to my principles," he concludes.
