Although for us it is routine and imperceptible we are in the future! What? Doesn't it look like it? The jams of flying cars on the M-30, the robomayordomos serving us dinner every night, time machine tourism, and laser ham knives to fillet new species of space pigs ... We can't live better!

In reality, none of this is true and although we have made numerous advances, including some of Star Trek , Back to the Future or Futurama , we still do not feel mired in the madness that science fiction authors thought for us in the past. As proof we will review some of the titles of works that are set in 2020 and highlight some differences with reality.

On the edge of tomorrow

At the edge of tomorrow is a science fiction film directed by Doug Liman and released in 2014, featuring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt . It is inspired by the novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka .

Synopsis : An officer who has never entered into combat is charged with an almost suicidal mission to save the world from a very dangerous alien threat and, oh, surprise! He is killed. But it does not matter, the protagonist ends up in a temporary loop through which he can try again to win again and again, which extreme game to Super Mario, and take responsibility for his actions.

Similar to today? Well, although unfortunately we have advanced a lot in the war technology and there are exoskeletons that help us to slaughter the enemy, our armament is still not as pointer as the one that appears in the film. For now there is also no trace of alien contact, neither so evil as to try to conquer us, nor so benevolent as to take us to fly by bike over the neighborhood.

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim is a science fiction film directed and written by Guillermo del Toro in 2013 and starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini , and Ron Perlman . Reinterpret the genre kaiju vs. wick in the purest American style.

Synopsis: Some very bad bugs, the Kaiju, from an interdimensional rift in the Pacific, create chaos in the world, but calm, some scientists, which have undoubtedly been documented in Mazinger Z, Voltron and, of course, Neon Genesis Evangelion , they create giant robots, well armed and fit, to face them. The bad: these robots are remote-controlled by couples of humans who must come together, almost spiritually, to fight.

Similar to today? For a couple of years we have been able to see how, through different brain signals, the human being can move robotic devices with the mind, from the prosthetic arm to the computer pointer through anthropomorphic robots, but it gives me that we still don't have technology or mental maturity to control giant Mazingers of nuclear potential.

Mission to Mars

Science fiction film released in 2000 directed by Brian De Palma and starring Gary Sinise, Tim Robbins, Connie Nielsen, Don Cheadle and Jerry O'Connell . The mission in the film is based on the Direct to Mars plan, a real proposal suggested by the Mars Society to send a human crew to the red planet.

Synopsis: The first manned mission to Mars runs into something they were not prepared for, a surprise of an enigmatic nature and, of course, an alien, which brings with it fateful results. Without problems, the movie is about NASA sending a second mission to make the same mistake.

Similar to today? Well, this time yes, although we have not yet set foot on Mars as a species, nor fought with mysterious Martian beings, we have achieved different advances in colonizing the planet, from registering its surface to find water to creating the program Artemis, whose goal is to bring the first woman and man to the surface of the moon in 2024 (approximately).

TMNT: Turtles in Time

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time is a Konami video game published as an arcade in 1991. It is a beat 'em up type game , of those in which you faced melee with a very unlikely number of opponents. It was based on the 1987 television series of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . The specific level at which they go through this year 2020 is called Neon Night-Riders .

Synopsis : Evident: It has occurred to Shredder to steal The Statue of Liberty, God will know why, and our friends the Ninja Turtles have to try to recover it while traveling in time.

Similar to today? Well, not only Ninja Turtles can travel in time, we can too. Think about it, you, there, reading this article, travel continuously towards the future. Although what we have not achieved, and I find it very sad, is to evolve galapagos to become teenage mutant turtles with high knowledge of ninjutsu and love for pizza.

Cyberpunk 2020

CYBERPUNK 2020

It is a role-playing game developed by Mike Pondsmith and published in 1988 by R. Talsorian Games . The game is set in the science fiction genre called cyberpunk .

Synopsis : In a dystopian year 2020, governed by cyclopeas and omnipresent megacorporations that operate above the law, society is in pure decline. The human race is the cause of the destruction of the ecosystem. There is no ozone layer, there is a layer of toxic gases that do not let sunlight and it gets worse with a permanent gray rain.

Similar to today? Well, possibly our dear Greta Thunberg and a few of us already feel like living in a climate dump at the height of Cyberpunk 2020. It is true that some advances that appear in the game have been far exceeded and that the ozone layer has partially recovered , but there is still much to fight on the environmental issue.
