During the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, sisters Ksenia Olkhova and Lidia Turovskaya were captured by the Nazis and were sent to Auschwitz. The last time they saw their mother was “sorted” upon arrival at the death camp. The Nazis brought the girls to exhaustion, using them as blood donors. Shortly before the arrival of Soviet soldiers, the sisters with some other prisoners were taken to Germany. After their release, they returned to Warsaw, but could not find relatives. Ksenia and Lydia left for the USSR, which became their new home.
