Beware of some smartphone chargers. The UFC-Que Choisir alerted this Thursday on the dangerousness of certain accessories, whose design flaws can have disastrous consequences.

In total, around twenty chargers purchased on the Internet or in supermarkets were dismantled and examined by the team of the consumer association. More than half of these products, sold between 1 and 35 euros, have electrical safety faults and eight of them could cause “fire starts” due to a short circuit.

Watch out for Chinese products

Specialists claim to have "observed electric arcs as impressive as frightening". On the other hand, an Apple charger and a Samsung, which have also been analyzed, do not present any particular risk for the consumer.

Faced with this observation, UFC-Que Choisir recommends avoiding the purchase of chargers from China on major online commerce platforms. The association also recalls a few safety rules: do not leave a charger plugged in overnight or when it is not in use, and above all do not place it against a carpet or quilt.
