In the future, the driver's license will be restricted for foreigners staying in Korea.

On August 8, according to the National Police Agency, an amendment to the Road Traffic Law, which requires that a driver's license be issued only when foreigners stay in Korea for more than 90 days and have registered as a foreigner, is about to be processed by the National Assembly.

This is due to the increasing number of foreign and domestic traffic accidents by foreigners who visit Korea as tourists and follow their driving licenses. Especially, 90% of them are Chinese.

The reason why Korean licenses are so popular among Chinese people is that they have about one-fifth less time to compulsory Korean driver's license training and are relatively easier to retake. Also, if you obtain a Korean license, you can drive not only in China but also in Europe and the United States under international agreements.

However, as the international community pointed out that the Korean driver's license was unreliable, some European countries raised the issue that safety is threatened by the abuse of a Korean driver's license. For the same reason, the Chinese demanded that the Korean government "restrict the short-term staying Chinese license."

An official from the National Police Agency said, "In the meantime, it was intended to attract tourists to give foreigners an easy driver's license, but the side effects were serious."
