The main greenhouse gases (GHGs) at the origin of global warming have reached new concentration records in 2018, alerting the United Nations to a few days of COP25.

" There is no sign of a slowdown, much less a decrease, in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere despite all the commitments made under the Paris climate agreement. This is the alarm issued by the Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Petteri Taalas, on the occasion of the publication of its annual bulletin on the concentrations of greenhouse gases when must to hold the COP25 from December 2 to 13 in Madrid.

Worse, according to scientists, carbon dioxide, which is associated with human activities and is the main persistent greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, broke a new concentration record in 2018, at 407.8 parts per year. million (ppm), 147% above the pre-industrial level of 1750.

Stronger growth

As a reminder, this report does not report the quantities of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere but those that remain there. That is, it takes into account that the oceans absorb about a quarter of total emissions, as does the biosphere with forests.

And WMO's concern is compounded by the fact that the annual increase in CO2 concentration has been higher than the average growth rate over the last ten years. Concentrations of methane for example (livestock farming, rice cultivation, fossil fuel exploitation, landfills ...), the second most important greenhouse gas, have increased more strongly than in the past years.
