The Catalan singer, embarked for the first time on an acoustic tour after four decades of musical career, arrives in Madrid with his great classics
Manolo García (Barcelona, 1955) went to a painter, worked in a metallurgical company and was buttons in an advertising agency, but what changed his life were the songs. First in front of Los Rápidos and Los Burros, then next to Quimi Portet in The Last of the Row and later alone, Garcia is one of those few artists installed in the collective memory of our country , thanks to themes such as Insurrection or As A donkey tied to the door of a dance . Almost 40 years after his first performances and with the illusion intact, he has embarked for the first time on an acoustic tour that now goes through the capital, with five (!) Concerts at the IFEMA Conference Center.
What are the main challenges of an acoustic tour like this? It is a way to rediscover old songs. I have turned around songs like A San Fernando , Rosa de Alejandría , Pájaros de mud ... and that new instrumentation allows me to sing better, without losing my heart to compete loudly with amplified and distorted instruments. It is a new job for me, very beautiful, but also more demanding. You have to spin very thin because any minimum failure is heard and you can play tricks. It's a challenge and a joy. What do you do every day when you're not on the road? I get up at seven and start painting, composing, playing ... I am happy. When the end of the tour is approaching, as it happens now, it gives me a bit of longing. But it takes me a while to get into new eggplants and I am already thinking of a new album, a book of poems and an exhibition of painting. You have changed several times from Los Rapidos, but there is a constant: the almost literary taste for the word. ..Yes, I am a compulsive reader and in that there is complacency. I have always looked for a certain lyricism and I like authors who are very prolific in terms of text. With my bad English I really enjoy Dylan and I am a lifelong fan of Aute, Silvio Rodríguez and Serrat. The text is very important, an unbeatable force if accompanied by good music. I also like the explosion in the ear of words like «ditirambo», because the ear must be surprised, in the musical and in the textual. A human voice saying "zarrapastroso" ... hosts, how beautiful, what a great vehicle for the mind is the verb, the language. You have been a supporter of the Ramones or Tina Turner. Which of your encounters with great musicians do you remember with greater affection? Perhaps the most special was when I participated in a Pro Human Rights concert, organized by Amnesty International in Barcelona. I was with Bruce Springsteen and Sting adapting a Bob Marley theme and they asked me for some phrases in Spanish. Later I worked a whole day in the recording studio with Sting, who asked me for a letter in Spanish for a song of his and then we went for dinner, drinks, we did a lot of coffee ... We had a great time. I also have a smile and a hug from Patti Smith engraved in my memory, which I deeply admire. I didn't go on a party with her, I wanted to (laughs). As a Barcelona-born father of La Mancha, do you think that Catalonia has an arrangement or you are pessimistic about it? The only possible way is politics, sit down and talk reach an agreement, which is reasonable in a democratic state. I fear that sometimes that of "a troubled river fishermen gain" prevails and that is unfortunate and very dangerous. The right thing would be not to try to put out the fire with gasoline, there are fire extinguishers that are called "doing serious, honest and eager to fix things" policy. We cannot get stuck, trying to solve this by screwing, stoning, loads of riot police, injured police ...
