More than 11 thousand researchers from 153 countries signed the scientific article “Prevention of scientists of the world about the climate crisis”, which refers to the emergency situation on the planet. The document contains an analysis of the main causes of climate change and a program to save the Earth from global warming, consisting of six main points. Article published in the journal BioScience.

The main authors of the article are American ecologists William Ripple and Christopher Wolfe from the University of Oregon. They noted that 40 years had passed since the First World Climate Conference in Geneva. And during this time, the growing threat of global warming has been repeatedly pointed out and calls have been made to the governments of all countries to take immediate measures to stop this process. Researchers presented evidence that today the environmental situation on the planet has become critical, and collected in support of their warning more than 11 thousand signatures of colleagues.

“Despite international negotiations that have been going on for 40 years, we are acting in the usual way and we have not managed to cope with the crisis,” said William Ripple, professor of ecology at the University of Oregon, one of the authors of the article.

The authors of the document studied data on global warming over the past 40 years. Researchers analyzed information on energy use, planet temperature, population growth, deforestation, thickness of polar ice, birth rates and greenhouse emissions. Scientists have illustrated significant negative dynamics in almost every item by graphs and numbers.

According to the data obtained, over the past 10 years, mass deforestation has increased by 50%, carbon dioxide emissions - by 18%, meat production per capita - by 11%. Environmentalists also noted that every decade the number of global natural disasters and abnormal natural phenomena increased by 44%, and the thickness of polar ice decreased on average by 4.84 m.

Scientists noted the need for a global review of the relationship between man and nature - the greenhouse effect can lead to a chain reaction and the destruction of ecosystems on land and in the oceans.

However, scientists noted a number of positive changes, for example, the use of solar and wind energy over the past decade has increased by 373%.

Scientists have identified six priority tasks (“six steps”), on the solution of which it is necessary to concentrate all forces. The original program for saving the planet included: reform of the energy sector and the transition to renewable energy sources, reducing the impact on the atmosphere of pollutants, restoring and protecting ecosystems, reforming food policies - reducing meat consumption and changing the diet in favor of consuming plant-based food, as well as building a carbon-free economies and stabilization of the population of the Earth.

Despite a formidable warning, the authors found a cautious reason for optimism. They noted a general increase in attention to the problem of the destruction of nature at all levels and hope that the quick and organized actions of mankind will help "maintain life on planet Earth, in our only home."
