The 78-year-old woman was a resident of a nursing home in Auby, North.

A resident of a 78-year-old retirement home was found dead in a canal this Saturday, according to firefighters confirming information from the "Voix du Nord".

The victim had disappeared earlier in the morning from the Beauséjour retirement home in Auby, in the Nord department. She had been seen for the last time at 10:30 am, before staff became aware of her disappearance and began research.

The firefighters first found the woman's shoes, before discovering her body at around 13 hours, floating a hundred meters away from the pedestrian bridge that allows the crossing of the Haute-Deûle canal. The latter is located behind the retirement home.

The unreachable direction

The home where the victim resided is managed by the Center Communal Social Action (CCAS) of the commune of Auby, a thousand inhabitants. According to the city's website, the retirement home allowed residents to "maintain its independence while benefiting from the collective benefits."

Management could not be reached this Sunday. The body of the victim will be transported to the Forensic Institute of Lille for in-depth examinations.
