A petition calling for the preservation of XS4ALL has been signed more than twenty thousand times after two days. KPN announced its intention to stop using the brand name XS4ALL by 2020 at the latest.

The XS4ALL petition must remain on Thursday following the announcement of parent company KPN, which wants to stop its sub-brands in 2019 and 2020.

Former XS4ALL employee Kirsten Verdel started the petition. Verdel was already surprised on Friday by the large number of signatures, which at that time stood at 8,300. "The signal we give it is clear," she said.

XS4ALL was the first internet provider in the Netherlands for private individuals in 1993. The company was founded by hackers, who thought free access to the open internet and privacy important.

In 1998 XS4ALL was taken over by KPN, the provider would actually continue for three years under his own name. "I think it's very clever that XS4ALL has managed to stretch it for so long", says former technical director Simon Hania against De Volkskrant

'Maybe it's over'

Hania calls the petition "easy". "It really does not help, the only thing that helps is when people become masses of customers," says Hania. Former director Doke Pelleboer regrets especially the loss of technical expertise that the removal of XS4ALL entails. Pelleboer himself also signed the petition: "Perhaps it is over", he says about the cancellation.

In addition to XS4ALL, the brand names Telfort and Yes Telecom will also disappear. "In the long term, KPN intends to continue to offer the services of these brands under the banner of the KPN brand," said a KPN spokesperson earlier. For customers, nothing would change regardless of the name, XS4ALL users also keep their e-mail address.

According to a spokesman from KPN, it is not yet certain that the brand name of XS4ALL actually disappears when merging the various sub-brands. "We see the sentiment, and what we have announced on Thursday, we will carry out carefully, and we will talk to customers about how we can do this as well as possible", says a spokesman for KPN.

KPN previously said that valuable parts of the subsidiaries such as XS4ALL are placed with KPN. The provider also refers to its stores as a future advantage for XS4ALL customers. Until now, XS4ALL customers could not go to physical stores.
