The 33rd minute of the second half ran, 15:15 it was between Germany and Spain, and with a victory, the DHB selection would still have reached the semi-finals of the Handball European Championship. Everything was possible, and if the entry into the next round had been successful, there would have been no quake in the weeks after that.
The rest of the story is known: Only ten minutes later, Germany was 15:23 back, lost the crucial main round game and failed as defending champion with a memorable bad performance. The job of coach Christian Prokop was in danger, with the controversial non-nomination of team leader Finn Lemke, the head coach had already gone astray in the tournament. Again and again there had been talk of a rebellion of the players against their coach.
A year later, and before the start of the World Handball Championships, these stories are rehashed, because the coach is still there. Prokop was allowed to remain despite critical voices from the German league, he wants to have drawn the right conclusions from the EM debacle, from a "ruthless work-up" he spoke to the SPIEGEL. Prokop and the old team, can that be good? The protagonists have remained, but there have been important changes.
- The tactic
"I had imagined much nicer and more modern handball than we played it," says Prokop the SPIEGEL. Nice and modern handball, meaning fast switching game - at the European Championships it became clear that this game idea does not fit the player material in the DHB squad or requires a longer preparation. It was "tactically and as a team not on a wavelength," says Prokop.
The offensive game idea should belong to the past, this is what the squad compilation speaks for. The recent Testspielindueue against the Czech Republic and Argentina point to a more defensive system. This may not be as nice as the spectacular speed handball, as Sweden plays for example, but probably more suitable for the physically strong German team.
- The squad
Prokop has made a more meaningful nomination than a year ago. The 40-year-old renounced this time on larger experiments, which will benefit the defensive, which is the showpiece of the German team and was crucial for the European title three years ago.
Only surprised the World Cup finish for Tobias Reichmann, who was the best laureate of the team in winning the title in 2016. But even this measure is understandable: His non-nomination creates room for an additional back space player. So it is clear: Prokop wants another option for a strong defensive, he had this one year ago by renouncing Lemke significantly weakened. Speaking about the time-outs at the European Championships, Prokop told SPIEGEL: "I could not hear myself at some time off, I reacted with harsh criticism and anger because I was so disappointed with our performance, so I did not instil a sense of self-confidence in the players. That was wrong." Now the players should take more responsibility.
Squad, tactics, team spirit - Prokop has worked on important parameters to make this time a better result. On some points Prokop has no influence on the game plan for example. Germany have caught the harder half of the tournament and would probably compete with France, Spain and Croatia for two semi-final places as they progress - a hard fate, at least France and Spain are stronger. Even with disturbances from the outside, the national coach must expect.

After the EM debacle Prokop is now under special observation, each of his decisions will be commented on and evaluated, occupational risk one might say. In part, it comes to exaggerated criticism, as now Michael "Mimi" Kraus showed that Prokop was keen for the non-nomination of goalkeeper Johannes Bitter.
One must know: Kraus is not nominated after strong season and injury problems, also teammate of Bitter and probably takes sides because of it; the current nominees Andreas Wolff and Silvio Heinevetter are international Topkeepers and are actually outside of any discussion. This fits a quote from Berti Vogts, who once said as national coach of the national football team: "If I walk across the water, then my critics say: can not even swim."

Three times world champion, the German league was long considered the best in the world - the expectations of the German handball players are generally high, before the home World Cup maybe even a little higher. But Germany does not play alone at this World Cup and does not have the best national league any more. Outsider: Angola (Group D, opponents: Egypt, Argentina, Qatar, Hungary, Sweden)
Angola is clear outsider at the World Cup. The country was previously qualified for a finals three times and always dropped out in the first round, most recently two years ago with zero points from five games and a goal difference of 122: 191. Angola will miss the second round this year as well, the team - almost the entire squad is under contract to Angolan clubs - is not competitive. Physically, the players are clearly inferior to the European pros, and so are most of the outsiders that followed.
Outsider: Chile (Group C, opponents: Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Austria, Norway, Denmark)
Chile will not play a major role in the final tournament. The country has always missed the intermediate round in his previous four appearances, it should also come this time. Korea (Germany's opponent in the opening match) is traveling to the World Cup with a unified team from South and North Korea, 16 South Koreans and four North Koreans have been nominated (special permit from the IHF, all other World Cup squads are limited to 16 players).
