Co-hosts Denmark won their first group match against outsiders Chile in Copenhagen with 39:16 (22: 4). The best thrower of the Danes in front of 12,500 spectators in the Royal Arena in Copenhagen was Casper Mortensen with eight goals.

After the 0: 1 deficit, the Danes quickly set themselves to 5: 1 (6th) and built their advantage by the minute. Chile allowed itself many technical errors and failed again and again to goalkeeper Niklas Landin of the German record champion THW Kiel. The resulting ball winners used the Danes to superstar Mikkel Hansen (7 hits) again and again to simple goals in the rapid reaction.

In the second half coach Nikolaj Jacobsen, who also looks after the Rhein-Neckar Löwen, cheerfully changed to save forces for the rest of the tournament. The Danes have a lot in mind. In 1967, 2011 and 2013, the two-time European champion respectively vice-world champion, they are still waiting for the title.
