The Greek football league game between Panathinaikos Athens and Olympiacos Piraeus was canceled in the 70th minute at the score of 1: 0 for Piraeus. Previously, hooligans had clashed with the police outside the Athens Olympic Stadium. The officers used tear gas that was blown into the stadium by the wind. Thousands of fans fled the stands. Many of them moved around the field.

Thereupon the German referee Marco Fritz interrupted the play first. In Greece, it is common that many top games are conducted by international referees. Fritz is usually used in the Bundesliga.

According to information from the news agency AFP, the referee called on those responsible to clear the 25,000 fans filled stadium. When this one hour after the interruption was not done, Fritz broke the Super League game for good.

Already in the first half of the game had to be interrupted for about ten minutes, because fans were running on the field and should have attacked team members on the bench of Olympiakos.

Panathinaikos is expected to be a loser by a sports court. This threatens a deduction of six points and a fine. Olympiakos is second with ten points behind Paok Saloniki and Panathinaikos only seventh.

Greek football has been shaken by violence for years. 2018, the championship of the Super League had to be interrupted for several weeks after riots.
