The women of VfL Wolfsburg have left the Champions League. In the quarter-final second leg against Olympique Lyon defeated the German champion 2: 4 (0: 2). In the 1: 2 defeat in the first leg Wolfsburg were in the first half with two goals behind, but had still fired the important away goal. It would have been a 1-0 win in Wolfsburg, but also in the second leg at half time was already 0: 2 for the three-time defending champion from France.

The opening goal for Lyon fell in a curious way: in the eighth minute Germany's footballer of the year Dzzenifer Maroszán stepped on the right wing to the free kick. Instead of flanking, she pulled the ball directly on the goal and caught Wolfsburg goalkeeper Almut Schult on the wrong foot - 1-0 for Lyon.

Olympique had the game firmly under control thereafter. High standing they bothered the hosts in the game structure, which could not mend it with long balls in the enemy third in vain. Lyon, however, combined at will by the Wolfsburg half - to dangerous goal scenes, however, did not happen. Until the 25th minute, when Ada Hegenberg appeared in the penalty area and was fouled by Schult. The captain turned Lyon captain Wendie Renard safe.

Double strike after the restart

In the 0-2 down, Wolfsburg would have to win at least 4-2 to reach the semi-finals because of the away goals rule. After the first half, this seemed hopeless, but Pernille Harder equalized within three minutes (53 and 56 minutes). Both times she completed from close range, each after a low cross from the left side.

The comeback seemed possible now, but Lyon brought the hopes of VfL a sudden end. Only four minutes after Harder's brace, Amandine Henry played Lena Goeßling on the right wing and crossed the high post, where Eugénie Le Sommer headed 3-2 (60 '). Shortly before the end of the game Le Sommer put her second goal (80.), at the latest now was the quarterfinals decided.
