For the first time, the total turnover of the top 20 clubs in European football exceeded the ten billion euro mark.

This emerges from the 27th edition of the “Football Money League” report, which the auditing and consulting company Deloitte publishes annually.

Accordingly, total revenue in the 2022/2023 season rose by 14 percent compared to the previous season (9.2 billion) to 10.5 billion euros.

Transfer proceeds are not included.

The previous record was 9.3 billion euros from the 2018/2019 season before the corona crisis.

The reasons for the significant increases in sales were the increases in match day revenue and commercial income, both of which reached records.

This time, three Bundesliga clubs are represented in the ranking of the 20 clubs with the highest sales:

  • Bayern Munich in sixth, Borussia Dortmund in twelfth and Eintracht Frankfurt in 16th.

  • Bayern increased their income to 744 million euros (2021/2022: 653.6 million), BVB came to 420.0 million euros (357.0), Eintracht to 293.5 million euros (208.3).

  • At the top, Real Madrid with 831 million euros (713.7) displaced Champions League winners Manchester City, who took in 825.9 million euros (731.0).

More and more people want to watch football in the stadium

»The clubs have been able to use their stadiums to their full capacity again and we have seen great demand from fans.

There were also record matchday revenues in the Bundesliga,” said Stefan Ludwig, head of Deloitte’s German sports business group.

In some cases the stadiums were more busy than before the pandemic.

»The desire to experience football live is currently at an all-time high.

Many clubs are trying to offer fans even more additional experiences in order to promote further growth," said Ludwig.

Matchday revenue from Europe's 20 top clubs climbed to 1.9 billion euros (2021/22: 1.4 billion), commercial revenue from 3.8 to 4.4 billion euros.

Commercial income was the largest source of income for the first time since the 2015/16 season, with 17 of the top 20 clubs seeing an increase in this area.

There was only a slight increase of five percent in income from broadcasting rights.

There are also increases among women.

According to the report, the average revenue of the 15 women's clubs with the highest sales increased by 61 percent to 4.3 million euros.

Croesus is FC Barcelona with 13.4 million euros.

Eintracht Frankfurt comes eighth with 3.6 million euros.

Germany's champions FC Bayern are ninth with 3.1 million euros.
