70 points from Joel Embiid, 62 from Karl-Anthony Towns – two stars created a spectacle in the North American Basketball League (NBA).

Embiid set a record for this season with his Philadelphia 76ers' 133:123 win against the San Antonio Spurs, clearly overshadowing the performance of super talent Victor Wembanyama (33 points/7 rebounds).

Last season's MVP is only the ninth player to achieve such a feat in an NBA game.

The 29-year-old converted 24 of his 41 throws from the field against the Spurs and was successful 21 times in 23 attempts from the free throw line.

The Cameroonian also managed a strong 18 rebounds.

Only Wilt Chamberlain, David Robinson, David Thompson, Elgin Baylor, Kobe Bryant, Donovan Mitchell, Devin Booker and Damian Lillard had previously achieved at least 70 points in an NBA game.

Chamberlain holds the record; on March 2, 1962, the legendary center scored 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors (now Golden State Warriors) against the New York Knicks.

The closest to Chamberlain is Kobe Bryant (81 points on January 22, 2006).

Michael Jordan, considered by many to be the greatest basketball player in history, narrowly missed inclusion in the elite circle (career best: 69 points).

“He can score points in so many ways”

“My attitude is to be aggressive every night and to attack both on offense and defense,” Embiid said of his record.

However, the duel with Wembanyama gave him additional motivation.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse emphasized that the combination of size and skill is what makes the 7-foot-1 Embiid so good.

"He can score in so many ways," Nurse said. "His sheer size gives him a lot of space around the basket and a lot of free throws."

Despite his personal best, Towns suffered a 125:128 defeat by the Minnesota Timberwolves against the Charlotte Hornets.

The fact that two professionals, him and Embiid, scored at least 60 points in one day was only the fourth time in the history of the best basketball league in the world.

No victory for German NBA professionals

A combined 32 points from German world champions Franz and Moritz Wagner were also not enough for the Orlando Magic to secure their second NBA victory in a row.

Franz Wagner, who was only playing his second game after recovering from an ankle injury, scored 17 points in his team's 99:126 win against the Cleveland Cavaliers, while his older brother Moritz had 15 points.

National team captain Dennis Schröder suffered his seventh defeat in the last eight games with the Toronto Raptors, who are in an increasingly poor starting position in the fight for the playoff places.

As so often, Schröder came off the bench and in just under 21 minutes on the floor, the point guard scored eleven points and three assists in the 100:108 home defeat against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Maxi Kleber also had to accept a setback with his team; the forward collected seven points and two rebounds in the Dallas Mavericks' 110:119 win against the top team Boston Celtics.

Mavs star Luka Dončić recorded a triple-double with 33 points, 18 rebounds and 13 assists.
