What happened yesterday

Senegal held their own: no false start for the African champions. Determined to retain their title, Senegal won their derby against Gambia. A victory in style thanks in particular to a brace from Lamine Camara (3-0).

Guinea beat Cameroon: quickly surprised by the Syli national, Cameroon had to fight to avoid a hiccup at the start (1-1). Franck Magri equalised but the Indomitable Lions were unable to do better despite a numerical half-time. Worrying ahead of the Lions' duel on matchday two.

Algeria conceded a draw against Angola: one might think that the Fennec would bite the antelope but the magic of the AFCON often calls into question the established order of the animal kingdom. As in 2022, Algeria drew their debut game (1-1).

In brief

Tunisia, a regular in the competition: did you know? This is Tunisia's 21st participation in the Africa Cup of Nations. But more importantly, it is the 16th in a row, which is a record in the history of the tournament. Still, his only win came in 2004 and that was at home. Twenty years later, the Carthage Eagles will try to repeat the feat, and it starts on Tuesday with a first match against Namibia.

Filling the stadiums: the organizers of the AFCON have tried to reassure fans who complain about not having tickets while the stadiums are far from being full at the beginning of the competition. They assure that they will resell the seats made available that have not found takers, and advise to buy tickets in official points of sale, rather than on the online site, which is saturated.

Signal cut: The television broadcast of Senegal - The Gambia was cut off on Monday on all broadcasting channels worldwide, for about fifteen minutes. On their screens, viewers could read a message about "technical problems". The broadcast resumed at the start of the second half. But don't worry, on France24.com, it is still possible to follow the AFCON with our live commentary of the matches. And the radio of our cousins at RFI never gives up either!

The Statement

Aliou Cissé, Senegal coach: "I can already see the headlines, but we have to leave Lamine Camara alone, he is a player who is going to improve. (...) He has fulfilled and fulfilled the expectations placed on him, but young players, you have to encourage them to stay humble. It's not enough to be good in a match or in a competition, to be a great player you have to be consistent and it's in humility that you get there."

If Aliou Cissé spoke of him earlier, it is no coincidence. A symbol of Senegal's next generation at the age of 20, Lamine Camara was logically elected man of the match after his brace against Gambia, including a superb curling shot.
