Brazilian professional footballer Antony will not return to his club Manchester United for an indefinite period of time following allegations of domestic violence brought against him. As the club from the English Premier League and the player announced on Sunday, he wanted to "postpone his return until further notice in order to clarify the allegations". Most recently, Antony had already been removed from the Seleção.

The allegations were made by Antony's former partner Gabriela Cavallin in an interview with the UOL portal. She had been physically attacked by him several times during the relationship, she said, describing the assaults in detail. The accused denied all allegations in a statement.

He would continue to cooperate with the authorities and prove his innocence, he had already announced, among other things. On Sunday, he again released a statement in an Instagram story. "I want to affirm my innocence," it says.

In addition, Antony wants to "cooperate fully with the police to help them find out the truth." The decision not to return to his club for the time being was made "by mutual agreement".

Manchester United said in a short statement that they took note of the allegations against Antony. Players who were not used in international matches are expected back for training on Monday. However, it had been agreed with Antony that he would postpone his return until further notice.

Both in Brazil and in Manchester, police are investigating the allegations against Antony. Two other women have since described physical attacks by the soccer player. Antony was not arrested and denies these allegations as well. Manchester United have not suspended him, he continues to receive his full salary.

"As a club, we condemn violence and abuse," Manchester United said in the statement. We recognise the importance of protecting all those involved in this situation and the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.

The northern English club faced rape allegations against its player Mason Greenwood in 2022. He was suspended by Manchester United after his arrest. After the charges against Greenwood were dropped in February 2023, the player joined Spanish top-flight side Getafe on loan on Deadline Day.
