On August 15, 2018, Michael Antonelli suffered a terrible accident in the
Florence-Viareggio event
.
Since then, the young San Marino cyclist was facing a long rehabilitation process that, unfortunately, has ended in drama due to the coronavirus.
Antonelli passed away this Friday, as announced by La Gazzetta dello Sport.
He had just turned 21.
He died in the San Marino hospital where he had been hospitalized for
a serious respiratory crisis
, two years and four months after the accident he was a victim of in the 72nd edition of the Firenze-Viareggio, an elite classic and Sub 23.
Then he competed with the colors of
Mastromarco Sensi Nibali
(the team that was the cradle of Vicenzo Nibali, among others).
His fall was at kilometer 91 of the stage, when he fell off a cliff and had to be rescued by a helicopter, which took him in serious condition to the Careggi hospital in Florence.
From that moment, Michael began a long battle of recovery, with visits to different hospitals, including the
Montecatone Rehabilitation Hospital in Imola
, specialized in spinal and brain injuries, and the Luce center in Santarcangelo.
A very difficult rehabilitation process from which, however, he was improving.
Although he was still bedridden, in recent months Antonelli could already feed himself and recognize people.
He had also returned home.
But the Covid-19 that had attacked him in recent days proved fatal.
