Mercedes-Benz has come a little later than BMW or Audi to hybridization, but it already has 22 plug-in hybrid versions combined with 14 different bodies, with gasoline and diesel engines (it is the only premium manufacturer with diesel hybrids) and in almost all the segments: from Class A to GLE.

The range is available in a

fairly wide range of prices

, since the cheapest version, the A 250e, starts at 39,350 euros and, in fact, there are up to eight versions -according to the manufacturer- that could even benefit from the aid of the Plan Moves II ... including Class C.

CLASS A 250e

We had the opportunity to have a

brief introduction to three variants, the A-Class 250e, the C-Class 300e and the GLE 350e

to get a clear idea of what the Mercedes plug-in hybrids offer.

The compact range, with the

A-Class, GLA, CLA and B-Class,

offers an undercarriage that combines a 160 hp 1.33 turbo petrol engine and a 75 kW (100 hp) electric engine, for a combined power of 218 hp.

Its electric autonomy is quite outstanding,

between 56 and 69 kilometers (WLTP)

depending on the bodywork we choose thanks to the 15.6 kWh battery.

The A-Class 250e is the gateway to the Mercedes-Benz EQ Power range, with an entry price below 40,000 euros.

It aims straight for the heart of the Golf GTE or the new Audi A3 40 TFSIe

(the heir to the first A3 e-tron).

With the car fully charged, the electric meter showed us

autonomy for 51 kilometers (although it homologated 60)

.

Given that our tour was limited to 30 minutes and was eminently urban, we could not verify the veracity of this figure.

We traveled 21 kilometers with electricity and although the remaining electric autonomy should have been 30, the A 250e marked 28. In any case, a

logical deviation

if we take into account that our driving was not 100% efficient, but rather that we circulated at normal rates, and that we use the heating.

More than the figures, which we will have to analyze more deeply and with more kilometers, we are left with the

sensations

.

The A 250e has good acceleration in electric mode and we can go up to

140 km / h with the boost of the battery

.

It remains for a later occasion to check the consumption that we can obtain in hybrid driving with and without a charged battery (not all customers of a plug-in charge the battery to the maximum every day), but for the moment we can comment that the

average consumption approved are less than 2 liters

.

The A 250e also allows us to 'play' with the two engines in

five

other

ways

: with

ECO mode

, the hybrid that seeks maximum efficiency where we will have the additional boost of the heat engine in strong accelerations;

the

Battery Level

, which maintains the battery charge in case we need it later to drive through a low-emission area;

the

Comfort

, which is not as conservative as the ECO;

the

Sport

, where the management of the engines focuses more on performance (in fact, the thermal is always active) and the

Individual

.

Class C plug in

The

C-Class

is the first to allow a

choice between plug-in gasoline and diesel

, both in the saloon and in the

GLC SUV

.

Both share a 90 kW (120 hp) electric motor with a thermal one: the diesel of the C 300de with 143 hp and the gasoline of the C 300e with 155. The combined power in the C-Class plug-in is

235 hp in gasoline and 225 diesel

.

The autonomy of the C-Class

EQ Power

(which has a 13.5 kWh battery) is in all cases between 50 and 60 kilometers, while in the GLC they fall, ranging between 38 and 45 (the highest weight and 4Matic traction does not play in your favor).

Here, yes, prices are already above

53,000 euros in the case of the C and 62,000 in the GLC

.

In the

C-Class plug-in

, the engine management works differently since the average sedan

does not have the MBUX multimedia system

and, therefore, you have to select the engine programs on the one hand and the dynamics on the other.

That is, we can choose between Hybrid, E-Mode (100% electric), E-Save (to maintain the charge) or Charge (we can recharge the battery while running, at the cost of burning more gasoline) on the driving side and, on the other, regulate the dynamic systems (change, direction, gas response) according to the Eco, Comfort, Sport or Individual modes.

Class E 300e

The

E-Class

once again gives us the option of choosing a diesel plug-in since the combination of the heat engine, electric and battery are the same as in the C-Class, but in the GLE we jump to a more powerful electric motor, of 100 kW instead of 90 (135 hp) and a battery with much more capacity: 31.2 kWh.

This allows us to offer

320 hp in the GLE 350de and 333 in the GLE 350e

and autonomies at the head of the segment, since we could travel

between 82 and 100 kilometers only with electricity

, depending on the version we choose.

Prices for the GLE plug-in range range from 76,400 to 87,700 euros (it is also available in coupe bodywork).

With the

E 300e we

traveled 28 kilometers, practically all by motorway.

In this case we use the

Hybrid mode in which all the options are active

: electric motor, thermal motor and both at the same time.

The result was that of the 28 kilometers, 25 were covered with electricity and 3 with gasoline.

Electricity consumption was 20.1 kW / h / 100 and that of gasoline 1.7 l / 100.

The SUV derived from the E-Class, GLE 350e, is the most advanced model in the EQ Power range since it is the one that offers a more powerful electric motor, a more capable battery and, with it,

a reference autonomy, capable of exceeding even the 100 kilometers per recharge

.

Its hybrid system works the same as that of the A-Class and that of the other models with the MBUX system, that is, the engine and dynamics programs are combined to facilitate the driver's task.

Charging point installed and free

The German brand also wants this avalanche of new features to translate into sales of 4,000 hybrids by the end of the year and for that reason, and thanks to an agreement with Iberdrola,

buyers of these cars will receive a free recharging point and installation, whatever your place of residence

(the cost is not the same in an individual home as in a community garage) and with a three-year warranty.

You can choose between two options: the 7.4 kW for single-phase installations and the 22 kW for three-phase installations,

so the former will be the most common for most customers.

In addition, thanks to the Iberdrola Energy Package, for which the supply contracted with this company must be obtained, the client will recharge electricity from 100% renewable sources and will enjoy a low rate (between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m.) at the that the price per kilowatt hour is only 0.03 euros.

With this price, a full recharge of an A 250e (which allows traveling around 50 kilometers) would cost just 50 euro cents.
