Three defeats in a row to Ukraine and Spain's unbeaten streak

In the central match of the game day, Spain hosted Switzerland in Madrid.

The Red Fury, which scored four points in two starting meetings, hoped to achieve a second victory and maintain the lead in Group 4 of League A.

In the camp of her rival, there was a small outbreak of coronavirus.

Defender Manuel Akandji and midfielder Jherdan Shaqiri passed positive tests for COVID-19.

True, a second analysis of the Liverpool player gave a negative result, and he was able to enter the field, although he played only half an hour.

The fate of the confrontation was decided by the gross mistake of the Swiss goalkeeper Jan Sommer, who in the 14th minute in a harmless situation presented the ball to Mikel Merino.

The Spaniard immediately got his bearings in the situation and made an assist to Mikel Oyarsabal.

The Real Sociedad striker has scored his third goal in eight international appearances.

Subsequently, the hosts could rather increase the advantage in the score than the guests - to recoup.

In several episodes, Sommer managed to save his team and thereby rehabilitate somewhat for the annoying blot.

Switzerland, in all 90 minutes, struck only one shot on target.

Thus, the Spaniards won a second victory in a row in the League of Nations and extended their unbeaten streak (11 wins and 4 draws) in all tournaments to 15 matches, which has been going on since November 15, 2018, when the Red Fury lost to Croatia.

In a parallel match of the group, Ukraine, as expected, lost to Germany at home - 1: 2.

On the eve of the October meetings, the yellow-blues faced serious staffing problems.

Due to the coronavirus and injuries, the team lost 12 players at once, including Alexander Zinchenko, Yevgeny Konoplyanka and Andriy Pyatov.

Under these conditions, head coach Andriy Shevchenko had to call players from the youth team, and the place of the reserve goalkeeper in a friendly match with France was taken by 45-year-old Alexander Shovkovsky, who retired back in 2016 and is currently helping Shevchenko in the national team.

In an extremely weakened composition, the Ukrainians on Wednesday could not oppose anything to the reigning world champions - 1: 7.

Two Shakhtar players, Marlos and Viktor Kovalenko, managed to recover for the game with Germany, but the roster of the Ukrainian team still remained extremely experimental.

For example, 18-year-old Ilya Zabarny and 21-year-old Vitaly Mikolenko acted in the center of defense.

This time, the defeat did not happen.

Shevchenko's wards at the NSC Olimpiyskiy in Kiev acted strictly from defense and allowed the opponent to hit their own goal only twice.

In the 20th minute, Matthias Ginter closed his partner's cross from the goalkeeper's line, and at the beginning of the second half, Leon Goretska took advantage of the gross mistake of Georgy Buschan, who released the ball from his hands.

At the same time, the Dynamo Kyiv goalkeeper played a decent match and made 10 saves.

15 minutes before the final whistle, the Ukrainians even managed to earn a penalty, which was converted by Ruslan Malinovsky.

However, they had no more strength left.

Germany managed to win the first victory in the new season of the League of Nations and extend the unbeaten streak in all tournaments to nine matches.

Ukraine suffered three defeats in a row with a total score of 2:13.

Jovetić's 27th goal for Montenegro

In League C, Montenegro, which got into group 1, continues to confidently gain points.

Following Cyprus and Luxembourg, Faruk Hadzhibegich's charges beat Azerbaijan at home - 2: 0.

The Balkan team opened the scoring already in the ninth minute.

Stevan Jovetic scored his 27th goal for the national team after a corner.

The guests opposed the opponent only with a rather rough game.

At the same time, they never managed to strike Milan Mijatovic on target.

Montenegrins doubled their advantage in the second half, taking advantage of the mistake made by the Azeri goalkeeper Emil Balayev.

The goalkeeper failed to fix the ball after a not very strong blow by Igor Ivanovich and released it over the line.

In the group 1 standings, Azerbaijan lost the second line to Luxembourg, which has already gained six points.

The team of the Grand Duchy on Saturday was stronger than Cyprus - 2: 0.

The striker of the Belgian "Wasland-Beveren" Danel Sinani, the rights to which belong to the English "Norwich", scored a double in the Luxembourgers.

Ufa midfielder Olivier Till also made a significant contribution to the success, having spent all 90 minutes on the field.

Decent Gibraltar performance and Latvia's failure

In the weakest League D, one cannot fail to note the results of the Gibraltar national team.

The team, which played its first official match only in 2014, began the new season of the League of Nations with two victories in a row.

And even though they were won over the no less modest San Marino and Liechtenstein, the progress of Julio Cesar Ribas's charges can be considered obvious.

And the leadership in group 2 only confirms this.

But the Latvian national team, on the contrary, is rapidly regressing.

If at the beginning of the 2000s the Balts were considered a strong middle peasant of European football and in 2003 even for the first time in history made their way to the final stage of the continental championship, then in recent years they have hardly gained points.

At the moment, the White-Reds are only 137th in the FIFA rankings, which forces them to play in the weakest division of the League of Nations.

The rivals of the team in the group were Andorra, Malta and the Faroe Islands. However, after three meetings, the Latvians did not have a single victory - they drew all three matches. So, on Saturday, the team of Dainis Kazakevich parted with the Faroe Islands - 1: 1. Leadership in Quartet 1 with seven points is still held by the red-blue-whites, who are close to being promoted and have a chance to compete for a ticket to the 2022 World Cup.
