Reports: Manuel Baum will become the new coach of German Schalke

Former Augsburg coach Manuel Baum will take charge of struggling club Schalke to succeed David Wagner, news reports said Wednesday.

ARD television station, Bild newspaper and Kicker Sports magazine reported that Baum will be introduced to the new technical director position for Schalke later in the day before he takes over the team’s first training session.

Baum, 41, coached Augsburg between 2016 and 2019 and is currently working as a coach in the junior sector in the German Football Association.

Schalke did not achieve any victory in the last 18 matches in the Bundesliga, and the German club sacrificed its coach Wagner one year after he assumed responsibility in light of the continuing negative results for the team in the new season.

Schalke suffered a humiliating defeat at the defending champions Bayern Munich with eight goals without a response and then lost at home by three goals to Werder Bremen to sit at the bottom of the standings.

The list of candidates to train Schalke included Mark van Bommel, former Bayern midfielder, and Demetrius Gramozis, who led Darmstadt to fifth place in the last edition of the German second division.
